Myst‘s ongoing story line is as convoluted as it is fantastic. Central to the story is the mysterious civilization of the D’ni, which creates entire worlds by writing books. Other books are used to link the D’ni worlds together. Myst trapped the player in a series of interconnected worlds, and challenged the player to puzzle through the ramblings of two mad brothers in order to free Atrus, their imprisoned father. Riven revealed more of the history of the D’ni, and sent the player to the unstable world of Riven in order to rescue Atrus’s wife.
Myst III: Exile concerns Atrus’s earnest attempt at creating a new world. He hopes this world will mark the rebirth of the D’ni, but before he finishes his book, a thief (portrayed in the game by actor Brad Dourif) breaks into his laboratory and mucks things up. You have to track this thief through worlds written by Atrus in his earlier years. Within each world you must right the wrongs the thief has created, all the while uncovering a deeper mystery surrounding his relationship to Atrus and his troublesome children. Prior experience with Myst and Riven isn’t necessary for this third excursion, but familiarity with Myst‘s point-and-click gameplay and its often infuriating puzzle logic helps.
New to the game is a full 3-D landscape, which replaces the static prerendered artwork of the previous games. The gorgeous new graphics allow you to quickly pan and scan your way through an area, looking for puzzles and action spots with the hand cursor. The puzzles have been improved so that you can now see changes to the environment immediately after you solve one, rather than simply moving on to the next picture. Still, the puzzles are often wickedly difficult and may prove frustrating to new players.
The environment is the true star of the game, and is sure to enchant players of all stripes. As before, the music and artwork are topnotch and immersing, and the experience is not easily forgotten. Myst fans of old will be delighted with this new installment, and those new to the series will be enchanted, provided they are willing to spend time on the puzzles, enjoy the scenery, and let the game carry them away. –Andrew S. Vivendi (72212) World of Warcraft PCWorld of Warcraft didn’t invent the online role-playing genre, but it certainly benefits from the missteps of other titles that have come before. A mind-boggling array of improvements in graphics, gameplay, networking, and interface–really every category–makes this game the crown prince of the genre, a great starting place for newbies, and a challenge to any other MMORPG currently in the works.

A History of Conflict
WoW takes place just four years after the real-time strategy Warcraft series, which chronicles a 25 year struggle between the Alliance (humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves) and the Horde (orcs, tauren, trolls, and undead). Even though there’s tons of accumulated story to the series, new players should not be daunted. The background is there for you to explore, but you don’t have to tread a lot of Azeroth history to get into the action.

The game looks magnificent. There’s plenty of detail and variety to the landscapes and interiors, and the artwork has a refreshingly playful style. There’s not a lot of variety in the character creation process, but with all the skills and proficiencies to combine in the game, WoW focuses its customization not on the appearance of your character but rather on the character of your character. The game lets you adopt any two trade skills, regardless of character race or class, and combine those skills in useful ways. If you choose skinning and leatherworking, for example, you can fashion bags from the carcasses of monsters you defeat, which will allow you to carry even more inventory items.
Expanded Commerce
You can sell the items you make, find, and loot through a variety of outlets. Like any role-playing game, WoW has merchants who will buy your cast-off items for fixed prices, but you can also sell to other players at your own price through in-game chat or by leaving it with one of the auction houses located across the map. This virtual free market is a game within the game, like Monopoly somehow inserted into the middle of Chess. Heck, you can even send items C.O.D. to other players via the game’s mail system.

In other online role-playing games, starting players have to invest dozens of hours whacking at small prey and doing other odd jobs one at a time to gradually “level up” to more interesting challenges. WoW lets players accept a variety of quests–up to 20 at a time without penalty for abandoning any of them before they’re complete. The makers boast 2,000 existing quests with more being added, many of them noncombat in nature. Where some games only grant experience through battle, WoW grants experience for exploring and fulfilling quests too.
A Level Playing Field
There’s also a built-in handicap for casual players where your character enters a rest state when you log off from the game. The longer you’re logged off (up to a week), the bigger the experience bonus you’ll get when you return to battle. An enemy tagging feature–the player who lands the first attack on an enemy claims the loot for himself or his party–prevents onlookers from swooping in and pilfering items from a monster that you brought down. That resolves a common complaint of other titles.

Most games severely penalize players when they die in-game, usually by shaving experience points, funds, or both. In WoW, death just relocates your ghost to the nearest graveyard, and the only penalty is the time it takes you to get back to resurrect your character’s corpse.
All of this makes for a very complicated game, but the well-designed interface puts all the game’s elements into icons either visible framing the action or within a simple keystroke. The enemy’s artificial intelligence is quite strong too: Monsters will join nearby fights to aid their comrades, switch targets strategically midbattle, and ambush players. The map system fills in details on places you’ve visited, so you always know where you are and where you’ve been.
Overall, World of Warcraft is a game that’s easy to learn, challenging to master, beautiful to watch, and tons of fun to play. –Porter B. Hall

In this episode, the iniquitous Poodles Galore has launched a giant can of hairspray into space, and the aerosol is slowly blasting away at the ozone layer. Unless SPY Fox can outwit Poodles, the citizens of the world will be forced to buy Poodles’s super-powerful SPF 2001 sunscreen to protect themselves from the ravaging sun.
Anyone who loves SPY Fox games won’t be disappointed. The meat of the mission is to collect the ingredients for a Congeal Pill that will put a literal stop to Poodles’s hairspray space satellite. To accomplish this, SPY Fox travels all over the world and meets up with an amusing and witty cast of characters. You’ll notice here the thoughtfulness that went into creating the game. From Bobby Llama, a Marlon Brando-esque recluse à la Apocalypse Now, to Roger Boar, an undercover agent with a penchant for new hairstyles, the characters are nothing short on character.
And, of course, SPY Fox comes armed with a double-breasted jacket full of spy gadgets to help him outwit Poodles and her goons. The most charming include the Sticky Stun Bun, which explodes caramel and nuts all over enemies, congealing them into one tasty mess. Other favorites include the Grappling Granny, Spy Mint, and Canned Laughter.
Gameplay is slightly complex, but it’s nice to see a game that actually challenges kids to think, instead of hand-feeding solutions. Operation Ozone requires that kids pay attention, as clues are dropped left and right that will be of use later in the game, and strong logic skills are certainly an asset. We only got slightly frustrated by the exactness expected in clicking. If you’re trying to use a spy gadget, you must move that gadget to exactly the right place or SPY Fox will tell you that’s not the right tool for the task.
However, that quibble aside, this is a SPY Fox game not to be missed. In fact, you’ll probably be disappointed when you finally finish the mission. But don’t fret, there are multiple mini-missions and endings within the game, encouraging replay. In fact, it’s so entertaining that parents–and older kids–might even find themselves playing along as well. (Ages 5 to

Instead of two similarly powered enemies facing off, the three distinct races in StarCraft have unique capabilities and strategies. Everyone still competes in the RTS genre’s typical race for resources, but that’s the only shared trait. Terrans can move their bulky mechanized bases as necessary, while the reptilian Zerg grow their colonies and warriors from mutating larvae. Meanwhile, the noble Protoss warp in equipment from their home world using psionic powers.
Not only does game maker Blizzard juggle the races’ playability and match it with superb art and sound effects, it also weaves together an engrossing three-act plot. Early on, as a Terran magistrate, you spend a breathtaking 30 minutes defending against a Zerg onslaught. As the story unfolds around you, you’ll experience the Zerg’s hive mentality and decipher the mysterious Protoss by the game’s dramatic conclusion.
Missions vary in scope and are effectively framed with dialogue, chapter screens, and in-mission exposition. Multiplayer games are also very well represented by Blizzard’s own free Battle.net service. If you’d rather play over a local area network, StarCraft will generously “spawn” up to seven copies so your friends can join in.
In keeping with StarCraft‘s groundbreaking design, Brood War presents you with three sides of a galactic conflict. Scheming humans, insidious Zerg, and proud Protoss collide again, with stunning new cinematics setting the stage. Old friends and foes and ominous new arrivals give the story a breakneck pace, while a handful of additions to each race’s arsenal makes for tense battles. Brood War also features stellar new environments and ambient art, as well as more than 100 additional multiplayer maps.
Some missions require a bit of finesse, breaking the resource-gathering routine while making good use of the new units. Humans now have Valkyrie missile frigates as well as medics who automatically try to heal your grunts. New for the Zerg air force is the acid-spewing Devourer; the new Lurker unit provides heavy-duty (under)ground support. Along with the Corsair fighter, the Protoss reenter the fray with Dark Templar, which can merge to form the devastating Dark Archon. Unfortunately, units old and new still suffer from weak artificial intelligence in path finding.
